Using WS_FTP to upload files

  1. Examine the initial WS_FTP screen below:

On the left is the "Local System," which shows all the files on your computer.

On the right is the "Remote System," which shows all the files in your web directory on our server.

  2. Look in the left-hand screen and find the file(s) that you wish to upload to the ortelco.net server.
    1. Double-click on a folder icon (), if you're using folders, to view the contents of that folder.
    2. Double-click on the green up-arrow (), to move up a directory. The top directory is the C: drive.
    3. Double-click on the drive-letter to switch to other drives. For example if your web pages are saved on a floppy, you would click on the [-a-] drive.

Note: The desktop is located in the Windows directory. To upload a file on your desktop, click the up-arrow until you are in the c: folder. From there, double-click on the Windows folder and then on the Desktop folder to view any files on your Desktop.

  3. Double-click on the file name you wish to upload (in the Local System screen). A copy of the file will appear on your ortelco.net web space, (in the Remote System screen).

Hint: If there are several files you want to upload at the same time, hold down the Ctrl button while you click on the different files. All the files will be highlighted. Then, click the right-button (). This button is located in the center of the screen and points toward the Remote System window.

  4. You can transfer an entire folder from the Local System to the Remote System. WS_FTP will automatically create a new Folder on the Remote Directory and transfer all of the files into it.
  5. When you are done transferring files, click the Exit button to end your session.

When all of your pages and graphics are in place, they are live to the Internet.

Note for advanced users: When people visit your site (or "hit" the link) a log is created. You can view the logs of all accesses to your web site as part of the Usage Tool. See the Help documentation in the tool for further details about viewing your logs and what they mean.

Viewing your pages on the Internet

Now your pages are live to the Internet. The address for your site is:

http://www.ortelco.net/~e-mail_name/

Remember to tell people about the tilde (~) appearing before your e-mail name in the address!

Sub-directory pages have the address:

http://www.ortelco.net/~e-mail_name/directory_name/file.htm
